Dr. Umar Mahmood is the Stanford Medicine Endowed Professor of Radiology and Chair of the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Mahmood’s research has focused on translational applications of molecular imaging to guide precision medicine, with an emphasis on the tumor microenvironment, cancer signaling pathways, changes in cancer metabolism, and the interaction of the immune system with tumors. He is interested in applying image information for disease characterization and optimization of individual treatment response. 

Dr. Mahmood is immediate past President of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), having served on the RSNA Board of Directors in multiple roles including Chair and Board Liaison for International Affairs. He served six years on the RSNA Research and Education Foundation Board of Trustees to help foster the next generation of radiology researchers. He has served as Chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health. He previously served for more than two decades on the faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) include serving as Chief of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging at MGH, and as Professor of Radiology at HMS.
